“It is in vain to say human beings ought to be satisfied with tranquility: they must have action; and they will make it if they cannot find it.”
- Charlotte Bronte
Tranquility means to have calm & peace on life. This can be used in a very optimistic tone & in a pessimistic tone too. But it totally depends on the person who wants to be in this state. This state of serenity is something which comes in everybody’s life.
In different religion, the word “tranquility” means something different. Such as in Buddhism, it came from the word “passaddha”, means the tranquility of the body, soul, thoughts & conscience on the alleyway of enlightenment & illumination. For this particular term, in Quran Shariff it’s written that, “It is He who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers, that they may add conviction to their Faith…”- page no. 48:4
There are lots of benefits of this state of mind. In psychology, the Attention Restoration Theory (ART) propounded by Kaplan & Kaplan proposed that, the things which are related to us or our daily life can be the things which will help us to come back to the real world. Sometimes, it happens with us that we are sitting at a place but not with ourselves, or we are not in the state where we should be. In that situation, these things & objects connect us with the actual world. People love to be in this state because they want to get distracted with the real world somehow or the other. Herzog & pheasant used another term, “Soft fascination”. It means that, people are deemed to occur when there is enough interest in the surroundings to hold attention but not so much that it compromises the ability to reflect.
Infact in the subjects like literature, tranquility works as the way to achieve serenity & composure in the life. Wordsworth, Shelley & Tennyson created the world of quietness & their lines paved us to the area of serenity where we can attain the whole consciousness & perception.
The stimuli with positive impacts on tranquility are a natural landscape, including woodland; wide open spaces; birds & other wildlife; presence of rivers, streams, lakes or the sea. On the other hand, there are some stimuli with negative impacts on tranquility are noise; light pollution; large numbers of people; masts & wind turbines.
