It seems that now-a-days television has become the source of
sensationalism & vulgarity. During the 1980s the television used to be the
source of our culture & tradition. People used to show the daily soaps to
their children in order to make them learn about the Indian culture. Hum Log, Buniad,
Swabhimaan, etc. were the daily soaps which started with a pure family story
& ended with the family issues. It used to show the turmoil goes on in a
family, the problems & sufferings they used to face in their lives.
Later on a period came into the television industry about
the fight against the existence in the society. Shows like, Shanti, Astitvaa –
Ek Prem Kahani, Kkusum, etc. But the new trend in television industry came up
by holding the hands of Ekta Kapoor. She feminized the Indian television
industry. The TV serials like, Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, Kyun Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu
Thi, Kahi Kisi Roz, Kkusum, Kesar, etc. were the shows which portrayed women in
a very different way. All the events in the serials used to roam around the
actresses & their struggle for their & their family’s existence used to
be the crux of the story. But after that, this kind of story also got a
shattered blow in the television industry.
The game shows like, Kaun Banega Crorepati, Kya Aap Panchvi
Pass Se Tez Hain, Dus ka Dum, Sawaal 10 crore Ka, etc. introduced in the television
at the prime time of the big channels. But this trend got changed with the
time. Now-a-days, the shows like, Splitsvilla, Love Locker, Emotional Atyachar,
Bigg Boss, are the events which is intruding in the personal life of the people
& are proving them wrong. Intruding in somebody’s personal life is not
enough, on the other ways people are enjoying these shows why, because the
directors of the shows are highlighting the vulgarity & obscenity in these
shows. If in Emotional Atyachar, the director in showing that a guy is having
intimate with her girl friend then what’s the problem. If he is bluffing his
girl friend then one day or the other the girl will come to know about it. But this
is not the way to show the world the vulgarity by showing kissing &
smooching scenes on TV. People cannot see television with the family members. More than that the shows like, Raaz - Pichle Janam Ka, Sach Ka Samna, etc, where the show directors again plays with somebody's personal life. We always says that "Past is Past" but we can't keep it past, we always bring it in the present.
Television is always used to be the medium of communication
from the 1980s, when television was introduced in India. But now being the
people of this generation we should think that what kind of think we are doing
& what kind of shows we are appreciating on television. These kinds of
hideous shows do what for the society. According to the Communication for
Social Change theory (CFSC), “The act of people coming together to decide who
they are, what they want and how they will obtain what they want — the
definition of communication for social change — demonstrates success,
especially for poor, previously marginalized or excluded people.” Again Paulo
Freire (1970), "The Brazilian educator who conceived of communication as
dialogue and participation for the purpose of creating cultural identity,
trust, commitment, ownership and empowerment (in today’s term)”.
Now being the audience, we should decide what to watch on
television & what not to. If we are watching any show then why & if not
then why not. We should keep in mind that television is the medium of
communication, not the medium of vulgarity & obscenity, which will surely destroy
our culture & tradition one day. Television was the medium of communication before almost 10 years, but now this has become the medium of sensationalism & lust.
